News for 2011

The Dover Western Heights Preservation Society would like to announce their second Open Weekend of 2011, which will take place on 22nd and 23rd October. The Drop Redoubt will be open to visitors again, as will the Grand Shaft. Re-enactors will be on site to make the weekend come alive before we have to close the drop Redoubt for the winter.

Entrance fees for the Drop Redoubt are £3 per adult and £1 for accompanied children. There is no fee for the Grand Shaft.

The Drop Redoubt is at the end of Drop Redoubt Road, off Military Road in Dover, Kent. It is the extreme eastern end of the Heights, with all other remaining structures lying to the west.

Please be aware that the Western Heights is now owned by various different agencies and access is only possible in certain areas. The Drop Redoubt, North Entrance and North Centre and Detached Bastions are owned by English Heritage; unauthorised access is not only dangerous, it is also illegal and will render persons doing so liable to prosecution by English Heritage.  In addition, illegal entry seriously jeapordises the work not only of the Western Heights Preservation Society but of all the agencies working to improve accessibility to this area.

The ditch around the Drop Redoubt is always accessible, as is the area around St. Martin's and people can walk along the top of the ditches past Detached Bastion and heading towards the Citadel. The site of the Grand Shaft Barracks is also accessible; this area, including the Grand Shaft itself is owned by Dover District Council. The Citadel itself and much of the immediate surrounding area is the property of the Home Office.  Unathorised entry here is a criminal offence and will render anyone attempting to do so liable to immediate arrest and prosecution.

The Western Heights are enjoyed by many people simply for the scenery and to take a relaxing walk around. If there is a particular structure or area that interests you, please let us know - you can use our "Contact Us" page - and we will do our best to answer your questions and queries. Please do not attempt to gain entry into any of the buildings you may come across - you would not only be rendering yourself liable to prosecution and risking serious injury, but you would be seriously risking any future projects that may be undertaken on the Western Heights, thereby denying future generations the right to see and enjoy these magnificent fortifications.

Where Are We?

You will find us at the Drop Redoubt road at 10.00am on workdays, dates to the left.
